My Eight-Eyed Coffee Companion

I am generally up anywhere between 5:00 and 6:00 in the morning, thanks to Oscar, our three-year-old Japanese chin, who gently paws at the bedroom door when he is ready for me to get up. Sometimes, for whatever reason, he thinks 4:00 is ok too. If I feel I’ve had enough sleep, I go ahead and get up, spending an hour or two of quiet time at the computer while having coffee before I get on with the day.

Just after Oscar (in the crate) and Lollipop (on the bed) return from doing their business outside first thing in the morning, they promptly go back to bed. Too bad that doesn’t work for me. Once I’m up, I’m up for the day.

Lately, a wee, juvenile bold jumping spider (Phidippus audax) has presented itself while I work at the computer. I am quite sure he has set up digs somewhere at the window behind my computer monitors. I am not inclined to do much dusting in this area, so he probably feels his cache of tiny insects for snacking is fairly safe back there. But, for whatever reason, he presents himself each morning, traveling all around the computer work area. Sometimes he stops to groom his legs and body. He seems to be most fascinated by my red Berlin coffee cup, and he likes to climb up to the light of a small desk lamp. Sometimes he’s on my keyboard and I have to nudge him elsewhere.

By the time the sun comes up and the computer area is well lit with natural light from the window, my eight-eyed coffee companion disappears. It is usually time for me to head outside for morning chores by then, so parting ways seems right. But, I think of my friend long into the day, knowing sometimes it’s simply the little things that mean so much. I hope this little fella sticks around for a while and continues to join me for coffee each morning. I rather enjoy his company!
