My Eight-Eyed Coffee Companion

I am generally up anywhere between 5:00 and 6:00 in the morning, thanks to Oscar, our three-year-old Japanese chin, who gently paws at the bedroom door when he is ready for me to get up. Sometimes, for whatever reason, he thinks 4:00 is ok too. If I feel I’ve had enough sleep, I go ahead and get up, spending an hour or two of quiet time at the computer while having coffee before I get on with the day.

Just after Oscar (in the crate) and Lollipop (on the bed) return from doing their business outside first thing in the morning, they promptly go back to bed. Too bad that doesn’t work for me. Once I’m up, I’m up for the day.

Lately, a wee, juvenile bold jumping spider (Phidippus audax) has presented itself while I work at the computer. I am quite sure he has set up digs somewhere at the window behind my computer monitors. I am not inclined to do much dusting in this area, so he probably feels his cache of tiny insects for snacking is fairly safe back there. But, for whatever reason, he presents himself each morning, traveling all around the computer work area. Sometimes he stops to groom his legs and body. He seems to be most fascinated by my red Berlin coffee cup, and he likes to climb up to the light of a small desk lamp. Sometimes he’s on my keyboard and I have to nudge him elsewhere.

By the time the sun comes up and the computer area is well lit with natural light from the window, my eight-eyed coffee companion disappears. It is usually time for me to head outside for morning chores by then, so parting ways seems right. But, I think of my friend long into the day, knowing sometimes it’s simply the little things that mean so much. I hope this little fella sticks around for a while and continues to join me for coffee each morning. I rather enjoy his company!

    1. Thank you, Fred! I didn’t know that about spiders being good luck on a boat! A friend living in Thailand once told me about geckos being a good luck omen there when found occupying a residence. Apparently, when they first arrived at a hotel in Bangkok, the hotel staff refused to remove a gecko in their room, saying it would bring bad luck to the hotel and staff were they to remove it! I’m fond of this little fella, who showed up like clockwork this morning. He’s on that red coffee cup now… I think he is attracted to the color red!

  1. You’re the only person I know who has an eight-eyed pet (well, sort of a pet). I’ve also never heard of a spider that follows a routine of the type you’ve described, interacting in a regular way with human elements like your computer monitor and keyboard. That’s a good closeup you provided at the end.

    1. My companion showed himself again this morning (Christmas Eve) just as I sat at the computer and turned my little lamp on. And sure enough, about 7:00 he disappeared as the sun shone at the window. Forrest saw him several times yesterday afternoon as he worked a bit in the computer area. It’ll be interesting to see how long he sticks around.
The closeup image was edited from the iPhone, it’s from the third image of the post with the coffee cup. You know how inept I am with techy projects, but I thought the closeup turned out pretty good for how easy it was to edit.

  2. A spiderwebbed that thinks he’s a cat. It figures – you must give off a “friendly” aura.
I know what you mean, you get up to let the dog out, then they come back in and crash back to sleep ….and you’re up. Between cat and dog, mornings once started, go at warp speed here.
really a handsome little fellow – got to be a story character with him.
Hope you and your are having a warm peaceful Christmas week!

    1. All is quiet here on the ranch! I imagine Forrest and I will go looking for the deer later when it warms a little. Oscar got me up at 6:00 this morning so he was generous letting me sleep a bit longer than usual. And my little spider buddy showed up just as I turned my computer lamp on. He’s been ON my coffee cup mostly – maybe inhaling the aroma or catching a little warmth from the mug. Ha ha!! You crack me up… “warp speed” is about right with critters. Best wishes to you for the holidays!!!

  3. Although I’m not a fan of the eight-eyed variety of roommates, I do have to admit he’s a rather cute little fella! Great close-up picture of him!!

    1. Thank you, Sister! These bold jumping spiders are so little they are no threat. I know you though, you would gently capture it in a tissue and put it outdoors. Personally, I’m always amazed at all of the tiny insects they capture so I just let this species of spider continue housekeeping for me over the winter months!

    1. Ha ha ha! Oh, Anne, these bold jumping spiders are little. I bet you have them in your home and never see them. Most of them are reclusive and like to hang out near windows.

      1. If I see a spider jump, I’ll jump much higher. The words “spider” and “bold” should not be in the same sentence. I’m glad you enjoy him, though. I’ll leave all the enjoyment to you.

        1. OMGosh that’s funny, “The words “spider” and “bold” should not be in the same sentence.” I’m glad you are just happy to read about my little friend and not have a close encounter!

          1. I’ve had enough CLOSE encounters to last a lifetime. When I was a child, I stepped on a big, hairy spider with bare feet on a hardwood floor. That’s an exaggeration, but never mind. You get the picture of the horror on my face.

  4. What a wonderful new critter friend and story. I think all manner of creatures must feel comfortable around you and your home… it might be your energy or it might be that your housekeeping practices are kind to them. I’ve noticed that after 5 years of living here fulltime, the lizards, geckos, spiders, birds and even the green tree snake we encountered last week, that share our space are much more visible and calm in our presence. What you and your spider have going on is a sweet thing… I love the closeup.

    1. Aw, thanks Dale. I agree with you about energy and feeling comfortable. My friend showed up again this morning, lingering near my hands at the keyboard and on my coffee cup. He also disappeared at the sunlight emerged in the window.

I hadn’t realized it’s been 5 years for you on your place. I’m flabbergasted at all that you have achieved in that time. I am sure keeping the critters in mind when landscaping and building anything, makes a lot of difference in drawing them to the area. Everything we do here now, is about attracting wildlife.

    1. It seems since we moved here we have never been alone or lonely! We do a lot to keep the land wildlife-friendly, and in turn we get to experience the presence of many species of wildlife and observe their way of life. We try to be good stewards of the land and all living things.

  5. Have you ever left him a tiny plate of gnats to nibble while you drink your coffee? Just kidding of course. Not everybody is excited about spiders hanging with them during the day at all. We have several that live in the corners of the house controlling the tiny insect population that goes unseen. We don’t mind sharing the house with others except for mice. We wouldn’t mind them either except for all the little brown bits they leave in our silverware drawer and food storage containers. Not to worry, we use small mouse-sized Hav-a-harts and I take them to meadows.

    1. I did not know Hav-a-hart had small, mouse-sized traps. I’ll have to look into that as we have issues on both porches with mice, and of course rats in our outdoor buildings is always a problem. I’m all for these cute spiders. They’re harmless, and of course this particular desktop specimen, seems to be friendly and polite!

    1. I never know how they get into a house, or why they decide to stay. Do generations of them live with us, or do they just sneak in the door or are carried in somehow? I have no idea, but I’m happy to have them around.

  6. My first thought was that your little friend might be attracted to the warmth of the cup, computer, and keyboard. Then, I saw you mention that he does seem to enjoy hanging around the cup — confirmation! I do think these jumping spiders are wonderful. I see black and white ones all the time on the boats, but I’ve never once heard that they’re considered good luck on a boat. I wonder if some captain made that up to keep his crew from nagging him about getting rid of the spider infestation.

    1. I hadn’t thought about the spider needing warmth! The coffee cup and the lamp would be perfect for that. This window is on the north side of the house and I often fine my fingers getting cold as I sit here so I can imagine my friend finds it a bit chilly until the sun warms things up. I suppose the electronics in this area may give off enough heat to keep a spider warm as well.

It would take some travel, or perhaps some clever know how for a spider to find its way onto a boat. It’s too bad we cannot discover the reasons for many oddities of life. I wonder what a spider could possibly find to survive on if a boat were out to sea?

  7. Ah, I love that you have a jumper as a pet! I’m jealous. 😉 I’ve asked a young naturalist friend of mine to write a guest post on spiders for my blog — I’m hoping she takes me up on it and includes jumping spiders in her article. They are the absolute coolest spiders ever. Happy New Year to you and all the critters, whether they have two eyes or eight!

  8. Thank you, Kim. I was surprised by the name of this spider when doing research. They’re so small, but they do have a boldness about them, so it’s fitting. I cleaned windows last week and found another jumper in the living room! It was an adult, who kept eyes on me from the ceiling while I cleaned. LOL

I wish you happiness in this new year too. All of our critters are managing well.

  9. Hello from the UK 🙂

That’s a nice story about the spider. I’ve had spiders on and around to PC too but they all decamped after a couple of days. We currently have one we call Ari (short for Ariadne) who appears, hangs around for a bit then myseriously disappears. These are just Common House Spiders, but no worse for that.

I hope your spider stays and that you will let us know how he fares.
