Squirrel Love on Valentines

I admit, I never have been in favor of these silly holidays and celebrations humans partake in. For weeks, the television commercials have been trying to “help” us find the best way to show our loved ones how much they mean to us. But, really, shouldn’t we show our love and adoration of spouses, children, family, or friends any time we feel like it or as often as we can? Who is behind this silly marketing idea of showing your love by buying someone flowers, jewelry, or (for those who have big pockets) a new car. People get engaged, get married, and plan various events around Saint Valentines Day. After all, it is the day to show your love.

Earlier in the week, I saw two squirrels who, for most of the morning, chased back and forth in the trees. Sometimes they were like racers, running along the fence line at top speed. Other times, I watched them go round and around, up the tree and down, then leap to another tree and start the routine all over again. I watched for about fifteen minutes through the kitchen window, until finally, the pace slowed, and they settled on a particular limb. Movement became slow and gentle… tender even. I fetched my camera and did my best to capture the beauty of the moment.

Sure, we can laugh and make fun of it all. After all, who photographs squirrels copulating anyway? Before we raised an orphaned squirrel I never thought about what squirrels do and, prior to moving here, I had never observed much of how reproduction occurs in nature. But what I have seen in the six years we have lived here, is that nature celebrates love whenever it wants to. It might be a pair of squirrels mating. It may be Daisy deer and Spirit performing mutual grooming. I might see a mother opossum carrying babies on her back while they venture out for food. I may catch sibling foxes at play in the pasture. Or in springtime, I might observe male birds doing their mating dances for the females.  In nature, love is all around us, every day of the week, and it is indeed a gift, to be able to observe the beauty of love in nature… and nature in love.

So enjoy your Valentine’s celebration, but remember, it is not just about one day. It is not about a gift or showing the world how much you love by the measure of that gift. No, Valentines should be a celebration of humans “being” love… every day of the year.

  1. Hi Lori, I’ve been having a farm girl fest this morning reading your last three articles whilst I have breakfast. First lol moment of the day seeing the squirrels keeping warm. I so agree with your feeling about the aggressive marketing of St. Valentin’s. I’m convinced that advertisers don’t get as many sales as they think, after all we’re not sheep. If anyone tells me I have to do something, I generally do the opposite. I hope FD is feeling better, ear infections are so painful. Enjoy your weekend keeping warm together 😉 .

    1. Oh, thanks Henrietta! FD should have a lovely weekend to recuperate since our weather is to be warmer but of course the wind also shows up! LOL Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could “farm girl fest” over coffee one morning? Some day I hope to travel to your neck of the woods and check out the country (and city) scenery.

          1. Thanks for asking. He’s doing a little better each day. The doctor put him on a different antibiotic so it appears to be helping. We haven’t had to visit a doctor in years… and for FD to opt to see the doctor, I knew he was in bad shape!

  2. Squirrel love 🙂 I am with you on Valentines day and its just a commercial holiday for businesses to make money between Christmas and Easter anyway! I prefer “Squirrel Love Day”, at least that would be VERY hard to commercialise! R rated Squirrel love keyrings anyone? 😉

    1. Ha ha ha!! Leave it to you to think of love key rings! I suppose I shall have to get signatures from these two on a document to use their poses for the key ring design? And, I see one of them out the window just now! They are frisky critters early in the morning.

      1. I love squirrels but then again I love racoons and I think the reason I love them so much is because we don’t have any here and looking at something from the other side of the fence it is easy to think “oh how CUTE” because you don’t have to deal with their naughty ways in person 😉 always best to get permission that way the squirrels can’t sue 😉

        1. Ha ha ha!! Well, I think since I feed them so much throughout the year, they’ll readily sign! Squirrels are not nearly as destructive as raccoons, or deer. We do what we can with fencing to keep the deer from our garden, but I let whatever ravage our flower beds, where I put in a few vegetables. The land turtles are another pest, but I love them too. Snakes are always frightening but I’ve learned to live with them as well. It’s all about getting along!

          1. Land turtles?!!! Is there NOTHING you guys don’t have? I now have to scribble in another “Oh I LOVE them!” to my mental list of foreign creatures to idolise 😉

    1. Oh, thank YOU for enjoying the photos! I love them too. They are so animated. I learned so much raising our orphan squirrel, Frosty. A person can’t help but love these bundles of energy and joy!

  3. Ah, love is grand. We had a 5″ snow on Wednesday and that literally shuts down our neck of the woods in Virginia. So yesterday, today, the weekend, and Monday is President’s Day (a Federal Holiday) has been and the remainder will be spent with my Valentine, the love of my life, my best friend, and my wife (all one person, lol). What a wonderful surprise for us and I refuse (on personal grounds) to say whether or not we have or will be emulating the squirrel behavior above. I will leave that to your imagination. Fabulous pictures and a nice story is par for the course, L. Sundog and I wish you and FD a happy Valentine’s Day – with or without the commercial trappings.

    1. Thank you Louis. Weather is warm but very windy here. I think we’ll put rocks in our pockets and dash out for dinner at the local winery… the only upscale place to dine in these parts!

  4. Love the squirrel pictures! Valentine’s Day is just another day for me. I am 27 years old, and have never dated anyone. I am sure someone will come along in the future, but for now, I treat this day as every other day.

    1. Hi Nathan, I knew you would like the squirrel photos! I completely understand about the “just another day” as that is how I feel about Mother’s Day. People can tell you they love you and ask you to be their Valentine, but it’s so much about being “in love” isn’t it? People tell me all of the time that I am a mother to Daisy, but it isn’t the same referral to Mother’s Day as what the day is set aside for. I think society often forgets that these silly celebrations actually hurt many of us and we feel left out. I’m happy to call you my friend any day of the week, Nathan. I like your blog and I enjoy that you post about varied subjects, especially about animal concerns. You rock!

  5. Sorry so late seeing this one — we went on a birding trip up north this weekend (brrrr!). Anyway, I feel the same way you do about Valentine’s Day. We don’t even celebrate it because it feels so commercial and contrived. (Don’t get me started about our highly-commercialized culture in this country….) I love that you took so many photos of the squirrels and took the time to share it with us in your special way. Your writing and photos are really special, Lori.

  6. Ha! I bet these two dated for months before this encounter. Perhaps they were seduced into seduction by peeking at someone’s television during whichever obnoxious Valentine’s commercial might have been playing. Or maybe they met at a squirrel bar and drank too much, losing their inhibitions like a preacher at a boys camp.
Nice photos Lori. How freaking funny you are!

      1. Lori is a special person who has managed to become skilled in many ways, not the least is photography, writing, and compassion. Her gentle spirit lives alongside a very determined and gritty soul that has transcended some difficult times, earlier in her life. Just ask Daisy how special Lori is, she’ll tell you.

        1. I know how special she is. Many times reading one of her posts (and looking at the fabulous pictures) has brought me out of a depressive state and made me wonder why I was there in the first place.

    1. Hello Margaret! Excellent questions! Gestational period for fox squirrels is 44 days, but there is no particular breeding season. When FD found Frosty the squirrel, he was maybe a few days old (thrown from a tree in a storm) and that was in early February. I have found baby squirrels in late August too, but I think they are born year-round here. The mother does raise the babies alone and is quite ferocious about chasing the male off before and after she gives birth.

    1. Thanks Celi! We often see little juvenile squirrels scampering about in the spring. And, just like your region of the Midwest, we are overrun with squirrels. I still enjoy them… they’re so funny and delightful to watch.

  8. Once, while hiking along the Wisconsin River, I heard this imperative squeaking commotion. I quietly walked in the direction of the sound to investigate. What I discovered were two red squirrels mating, and squeaking with emphatic delight, as they moved in a spiral up a small tree. Unforgettable. Thanks for your post!

  10. I am surprised that I missed this post. What a wonderful and fun catch! Lori, if you hadn’t said they were through the kitchen window I would never have guessed.

I am afraid that Valentines day came and then blew right by me this year. Madison Avenue would not approve! Meh, like I care… LOL! As for being late to the party, well, in this case it was worth the wait, because I got to read all the lovely comments from your blog visitors, and they were great fun! I also learned how two of my most recent visitors found me, and I always enjoy how the circles in our blog friendships fan out, spreading to overlap each other. You meet the nicest people in this way… 😀

    1. I know Lynda, I really feel the love here from so many wonderful people. A while back I told someone I was very much a hermit, and didn’t get out much in this area. She exclaimed that wasn’t good for me that I really needed to be more active in this rural community. I disagree! My experience in the blogosphere has been nothing short of life-changing! This is one of the most positive experiences I’ve had in life. I am continually learning, feeling, interacting, and encouraging… I feel enveloped in a cloud of positive and kindness. And you’re right… the circle of friendships fans out and it’s utterly amazing the wonderful people we meet.
