New Year Cheer with Daisy Deer

FD recently captured Daisy and me having a little mother and daughter time, and I wanted to share these photos with you, my readers.  We do not see Daisy every day like we used to, as she is a young lady now – well, maybe more like a wayward teenager!  But whenever she comes to visit, we always take advantage of the opportunity for some bonding time with her. This, we know, is precious time and it means so much to us. Yes, I get pretty darned excited when Daisy shows up!

This past year brought a lot of growth for Daisy… setting out on her own on January 16th, becoming a yearling in late May, and experiencing her first rutting season in November. She has managed to live by instinct, surviving on her own in the wild.  Yet, she has maintained bonds with humans.  What a gift for all of us that she continues to grace our lives, showing us the gentle ways of nature.

A special thanks goes out to each of you for taking an interest in Daisy deer’s journey.   I appreciate the support and encouragement from all of you!  It has meant so much to me.

    1. I thought that very same thing… ears back like that she was rebelling me! She’s also been losing her reflective collars lately. I’m beginning to think she’s unhappy with the collar styles… darned teenagers!

    1. I hope Daisy does well too. I think right now (and I’ve had several women tell me this) that if Daisy is pregnant, likely she is feeling the changes within her and she is a different girl from the silly and playful girl I knew not too long ago. I understand closer to the birthing time does tend to be very territorial. Likely, we will see many changes in Daisy.

    1. Thank you Sue, what a lovely compliment! If you are talking about the header photo, that was taken a couple of years ago after a damaging ice storm. All morning the cardinal’s were in the nearby trees, giving the landscape a pop of brilliant red! They are one of my favorite birds, all year long!

    1. Oh yes!! That is my favorite and most fabulous ear warmer EVER!! I love the matching scarf too! I know it doesn’t match FD’s old “duck hunting” coat, but I always dress in my warmest when I go out to see Daisy in the cold weather. I love my ear warmer and my scarf Sissy! Thank you so much for making it for me! I LOVE it!

    1. Ha ha ha!! Thank you Baby Sister. I’ve often thought that reading others’ blogs too that a LOVE button would be more appropriate. I AM happy anytime I get to see my girl. And I am very happy living here on this fantastic little stretch of land. Each day is a gift with God’s creatures… all of them.

    1. Thanks Tim… my husband, FD, took the photos of Daisy and me, but on most of my blog posts I’m the photographer. I really enjoy being in the woods.. there is always something to photograph!

  16. Lovely photos and she does have beautiful eyes :). We purchased a little red Western Australian rosella at a pet shop when we lived in Western Australia. We kept him in a large cage and hung him outside to enjoy the scenery and soon, a flock of Western red rosellas started coming to our garden to talk to him. One little female was very taken by him. He was very pretty with a bright red neck and head and she would sit on the outside of the cage on the perch that was extended out of the cage and would snuggle up to him and they would chatter quietly away. It was love at first sight :). We noticed her climbing all over the cage for a few days and didn’t think anything of it but one morning, after hanging him outside we came out to find the door of the cage open and no parrot inside! He was gone :(…6 months later we heard a commotion and scratching under the eaves and came out to see our parrot and his new partner chewing the roof to get in! They nested in there and raised a family and then left. They repeated this for a few years and then tailed off coming. We moved after that but it was wonderful to see that our parrot knew that we were a safe option to return to for his first few years getting used to living in the big wide world outside his cage. There is something immensely satisfying in watching something that you have “owned” or raised heading out into the wild…its almost like farewelling your child into the arms of the wider community and the world in general…its a poignant and most difficult moment but in, and of itself, an incredibly enlightening time 🙂

    1. What an interesting story!! You are right, there IS something very satisfying in knowing that something can return to the wild and survive in the wild. Just last evening we spotted Daisy with 2 does, feeding in a wheat pasture nearby. She’d been missing for 9 days. I was so happy to see her run off with the group as we approached! She is acclimating to the wildness within her. Yes, it’s sad that maybe someday she won’t come to me anymore, but I think I would worry less about her if she didn’t approach people. Humans are not always going to be kind to her. Naturally, she would fear us, so it is as it should be. Still, I hope that she will come occasionally to feed here, and I hope we’ll always be able to collar her for her safety.

    How wonderful to see your happy smiling face with beautiful Daisy. I have been going through long periods of absence from the blog and writing in general as I adjust to life after school, but I am trying to get back to it lately. So I have quite a bit of reading to catch up on, and yours is my favourite for its heart and spirit of lovingkindness. I feel a sorrow in it too, and maybe that is just me, but it is a good feeling that brings to mind Guanyin, the goddess of compassion. You remind me of her.

    1. Owl, you read me well. I often feel my compassionate nature stems from life experiences that led to a deeper understanding… and many times those experiences were difficult. In nature, I find comfort and perhaps a “teacher” that helps me sort through the chaos and noise of the world. Simplicity and peace is the gift. There is always a message, now that I am able to listen and dissect myself from much of the pain that life offers. There is much sorrow in life, but we would not know happiness without knowing sorrow.

      I had to research Guanyin… what a lovely compliment Owl! I too, wish you inspiration, energy and love for the new year!

  20. ???? Seen that Daisy girl yet? Keeping an eye on our little herd that hides in the fog near here…they wander easements and creeks to appear in a field behind an older couple’s home at the edge of a field….and wisely vanish like ghosts before it gets very light or the fog thins.
    Hope you are staying warm!

    1. Yes I have seen her but we have to venture about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from here to see her, usually just before dark. She’s been living in the old river channel area, and we’ve caught her grazing in a nearby wheat pasture with about 6 or more does. We yelled to her one evening just as she appeared to come out from the trees! She looked at us and did not run. And just the past two nights, the deer have been at the corn and deer chow feeders again… so they’re back to our place which feels good! I’m so happy she’s settled in with a local herd! Isn’t it just amazing how they move and vanish? It is a gift to see them and observe their mystifying ways!

      And yes, it has been a fairly warm winter so far, but I still tend to gripe and complain when we get a bitter cold day here and there! I’m always ready for spring and summer!
